Courses
Schedule for spring and summer 2009
There are five courses associated with the HHMI G.A.T.O.R program.
- Undergraduate Research (3 credits, summer (optional), fall (required) and spring (optional)). The course allows undergraduates to receive research credits for their time in the lab. Students can enroll through the department of their choosing under the 4905 course number.
Weekly progress report (recommended to help undergraduates and their mentors organize their work from week to week).
- Communicating Complexity in Science (3
credits),
offered every spring semester (2007 – 2010). The course addresses challenges faced by scientists who must make their findings accessible to a diverse public audience. During the semester, several invited speakers with backgrounds in science, politics, policy, media, journalism, or the arts will join class discussions to explore the nature of these challenges and how they might be successfully resolved. Skills to be learned and used include basic website design, scientific poster design and presentation, and media training/slide design to develop skills in speaking with the general public. Graduate mentors and undergraduate fellows are required to attend. Associated faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates working with HHMI-sponsored teams are also invited to participate.
- G.A.T.O.R. Discussion Group (1 credit, summer and fall semesters). Participants will share research, address problems
and questions, and discuss important professional issues,
including ethics, networking, presentation skills, and the
process of publication. This required weekly discussion group is scheduled
for all of the undergraduate and graduate students in the
program. Associated faculty, graduate students, and
undergraduates working with HHMI-sponsored teams are also
encouraged to participate.
Summer 2009 syllabus.
Why feeling stupid is a good sign in science research - by Martin Schwartz.
- Modern Research Techniques summer
workshop. This short workshop is offered
at the beginning of every summer (2007 – 2010). Undergraduate
fellows are required to attend. This orientation
workshop will teach basic lab awareness and skills needed
by the students once they enter their research labs. Skills
will be tailored to the needs of the participating research
labs.
